Emergency Department Expansion

With the addition of 130,000 square feet, Lehigh Valley Health Network’s Cedar Crest Hospital operates one of the largest emergency departments in the country. Completed in 2021, the expansion includes 96 adult exam rooms, 64 observation beds, 24 pediatric exam rooms, and 14 pediatric observation beds.

Driven by a vision to elevate the patient experience, the new space features generous waiting areas with natural light, integrated on-site imaging, diagnostics, and pharmacy services, and large observational units that provide flexibility for extended care needs. Negative pressure rooms and advanced air circulation systems enhance infection control, supporting a safer clinical environment.

The pediatric emergency department was designed as a distinct, family-centered space and doubles LVHN’s capacity to care for children. At the time of opening, it was the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center qualified in pediatric trauma.
