St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth executed a transformative 83,000 SF expansion—designed and built in just 11 months—in a prior ERDMAN project, the hospital relocated surgical services to a new Surgical & Procedural Care Center. This vertical expansion project connected via skybridge to the main hospital. This strategic move improved operational flow, strengthened surgical service line performance, and established a foundation for both vertical and horizontal campus growth.

The vertical expansion sits atop 10 universal ORs, including a hybrid suite, alongside 42 private pre- and post-op rooms, wrapped around a centralized staging area for optimal staff efficiency. Built below budget and delivered swiftly, this project demonstrates ERDMAN’s expertise in aligning design, planning, and construction to support long-term strategic objectives—and bring advanced surgical care closer to home for Duluth’s community.

St. Luke’s sought to boost recognition of its position as the provider of choice for surgical care services and increase market share. To help expand the ability to provide such premier care close to home, ERDMAN was retained to design a healthcare facility with state-of-the-art operating rooms, create efficient surgical flows, and plan for an exceptional patient experience.

Through successful collaboration on the complex design, coupled with the integration of imaging technology, St. Luke’s now has leading surgical capabilities that were once unavailable in the area. The design improved flow and efficiency by wrapping the surgical suite around a central staging area, then wrapping private pre-op/post-op rooms around the surgical suite.
