UF Health Shands Hospital recognized the need to upgrade and improve pediatric care facilities as its number of pediatric patients grew. Although the existing pediatric surgery center was nice, it was an older facility, located in a cluttered part of town, and had an expiring lease. UF Health Shands Hospital engaged ERDMAN to expand the footprint of the UF Health Florida Surgery Center, developed by ERDMAN in 2006, to provide state-of-the-art, specialized care and support for their youngest patients and families. UF Health sought to:

  1. Maximize the ability to share surgical resources
  2. Enhance operational efficiency
  3. Increase easy access to care for patients and families
  4. Create an environment where children facing surgery are treated with “respect, dignity and love.”

In collaboration with UF Health facilities experts, and with valuable input from UF College of Medicine faculty physicians and UF Health Shands nursing and clinical staff from the Children’s Surgical Center, ERDMAN used the full complement of our Integrative Thinking process to develop the New UF Health Children’s Surgical Center. This 17,500-square-foot facility is connected to the UF Health Florida Surgical Center. With a separate family-friendly entrance and waiting area, the new center features a nautical-themed design. Echoing the design of the UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital, it is inviting and comforting to children faced with surgery. Additional benefits include:

  1. Separate preoperative, post-anesthesia care and postoperative recovery areas to guide patients and their families every step of the way
  2. Four large operating rooms designed specifically for procedures for children and adolescents.
  3. Connecting the centers allows for shared infrastructure, including central sterile supply and other diverse support resources
  4. Increased operational efficiency

This new Children’s Surgical Center allows UF Health to create a warm, welcoming environment for young patients and their families, advance pediatric care, increase volumes, and most importantly, further their mission “to provide high-quality clinical care and to promise every patient their best experience possible at UF Health.”
