PUEBLO OF JEMEZ HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES DEPARTMENT

IDENTIFIED CHALLENGES

As a tribally governed entity, the mission of the Pueblo of Jemez Health and Human Services (JHHS) Department is to provide healthcare and social services while working to strengthen the Jemez culture and community—both now and for generations to come. That’s become increasingly challenging with JHHS operating from an inefficient facility with no room for growth. The department asked ERDMAN to analyze its current operations and also propose solutions that would allow JHHS to meet the following objectives:

  1. Develop and implement an immediate plan of action for the future of the current medical facility
  2. Assess market options that consider the healthcare population of the Pueblo of Jemez and communities surrounding the Pueblo of Jemez
  3. Make well-informed decisions for the long-term based on a set of alternative health models that address the Jemez Tribe’s need to not only have access to quality comprehensive healthcare but to remain culturally strong and cohesive well into the future

APPROACH / OUTCOME

ERDMAN conducted a market assessment of community health needs. We also led consensus-building within the tribal government organization to help them gain an in-depth understanding of the current challenges, developed alternative solutions for those challenges along with accompanying financial data, and presented leaders visual concepts for the potential solutions. Today, based on the decisions of tribal leaders and the JHHS, the Jemez community can now move ahead with implementing the solution, including:

  1. A phased approach that allows the JHHS to take a proactive role in addressing the healthcare needs of the Pueblo of Jemez and its surrounding communities
  2. A 3- to 5-year plan to renovate and expand in place, including adding a new fitness center
  3. A 5- to 10-year relocation plan for a large campus facility that includes comprehensive healthcare services as well as complementary educational and social services to create a consolidated healthcare community center for the Tribal community as well as residents of nearby communities

Renovation/expansion plans are currently underway for the first phase of the existing medical facility.
