Market realities, regional influences, and evidence-based research drive project success

SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – Janesville puts its patients and community first. Its goal was to create a healthcare campus that meets the highest standards for design and quality, all while reflecting the local culture and landscape. Key considerations included cost-efficient operations and sustainable practices, as well as flexibility for future expansion. An integrated, patient-centric design process was used to best ensure the hospital could offer quality care.

Through an integrated project delivery model, the design process was informed by cost implications from the very start. Critical decisions were also based on market realities, regional influences, and evidence-based design research. In turn, an efficient design was created that produced significant savings. These savings allowed SSM Health to reinvest in the project for added programming, equipment, and detailed design work. The completed hospital is a state-of-the-art healthcare facility that was built under budget and supports growth to best serve the local community.

New suburban clinic promotes lean, patient-centered care and expands service offerings

SSM Health Dean Medical Group needed to expand its services within a growing suburban community. Because of site constraints at the original clinic, Dean opted to build the Dean Waunakee Clinic on a site that offered more room for future growth. Dean viewed the new clinic as an opportunity to advance its lean methods initiative and incorporate patient-centered care at the heart of clinical operations.

ERDMAN facilitated a week-long 2P (process planning) event involving design charrettes and physical mock-ups of potential clinic spaces to develop the new care model. The Waunakee clinic is Dean’s first clinic completely designed with lean, patient-centered medical home features. The patient experience is improved with reduced wait times, convenient wayfinding, natural light, and increased efficiencies. Expanded services include family medicine, optometry, imaging, and lab testing. As sourcing local businesses was also important, all subcontractors were from Wisconsin.

Cohesively functioning campus improves efficiency and satisfaction

Rochelle Community Hospital sought to consolidate two rural clinics with differing operational layouts, cultures, and services. It was important that the new clinic operate as a cohesively functioning environment on the hospital’s main campus. In turn, Rochelle Community Hospital could strengthen its connection to the community, all while continuing to be a local leader in healthcare.

While complying with rural healthcare clinic regulations, ERDMAN planned and designed the project to streamline operations, update care models, and improve recruitment and staff satisfaction. Greater efficiency was achieved through an updated clinic layout, reallocation of staff, and a more consistent patient experience that aligns with the hospital’s brand. Today, the clinic promotes health and wellness with its expanded services of orthopedics, rehabilitation, primary care, fitness, and more.

Working with the group from ERDMAN was smooth and efficient from the initial concept planning to the ribbon cutting. The full range of services ERDMAN provides minimizes the number of contacts necessary through the entire length of the project. Knowing the status of the project was always front and center through the consistent Contractor/Owner meetings. We would welcome the opportunity to work with ERDMAN again on any future projects.

Delivering a more seamless continuum of care to a growing community

Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) sought to create capacity and strengthen its commitment to area families by creating the Muhlenberg Family Health Pavilion. This endeavor also provided an opportunity for LVHN to capture additional market share in a region of growing healthcare demand.

This campus expansion allows LVHN to provide exceptional obstetric care, newborn care services, and a seamless continuum of care. The scope included a mother-baby unit with 20 private rooms, a Level II NICU with 10 private rooms, inpatient rehabilitation services, and a new downtown-facing entrance. Amenities such as the rehab therapy healing garden and enhanced wayfinding were also thoughtfully incorporated into the design. As Bethlehem’s only hospital for delivering babies, LVHN became well-positioned to grow and support its community.

ERDMAN’s integrated process benefited us greatly in the sense that it was one point of contact throughout the entire process from the very early planning, through design, construction and occupancy. That allowed us to assign one project manager, where in the past a project of this size would have taken two or more of our project management resources. Having that one point really made the project go very efficiently.

Improving the patient experience while optimizing future campus growth potential

Project goals for the Valley West Hospital expansion included creating a more welcoming environment, improving the patient experience, and supporting growth and future flexibility. Finding the best path to meeting Northwestern Medicine’s needs would mean:

  • Finding an optimal strategy to remedy a patient wing still using semi-private rooms
  • Making campus improvements that would also help recruit top talent
  • Optimizing future growth potential with smart construction decisions that also maintain a safe and fully functional facility

The expansion resulted in a new 19-bed, inpatient wing that provides the latest inpatient care and comfort, while offering an appealing and invigorated campus environment. The project created a stunning new front entrance, and the renovated administration area supports provider and staff satisfaction. Such additions have led to a higher level of care, and increased the system’s ability to attract new physicians, specialists, and clinical staff.

Patient-centered medical space is a beacon of care and support in the community

Family Healthcare of Hagerstown is a Federally Qualified Health Center that offers a “medical home” environment, providing affordable primary, dental, and mental care at a single location. Seeking to overcome the challenges associated with rebranding and relocation, the client selected ERDMAN’s expertise as they embarked on an adaptive reuse of an unoccupied 1970s office building that offered better visibility and community access.

ERDMAN worked closely with Family Healthcare of Hagerstown to create a vibrant, spacious environment that includes integrated care team spaces. The four-story, multiservice clinic is warm and comforting, with features that include new energy-efficient MEP systems, a single check-in area, and a convenient color-coded wayfinding system. Today, the clinic serves an expanding patient population and is a beacon of care and support in the community.

I think ERDMAN is well aware that the standard for a healthcare facility is more than just bricks and mortar. We didn’t want to have to explain what an exam room should look like or how patient flow should operate. People have a lot of choices and why should they come to us over anywhere else? We’ve been here for about a year and a half, and there are very few things that we would change.

New emergency center brings efficiency, security, and quality care to community

The ER on Lover’s Lane is Baylor Scott & White Health’s first freestanding emergency center. In planning for the project, the intent was to create a space that offers flexibility and access to quality care.

Through strategic design and programming, the new ER brings efficiency, security, and needed healthcare services to the community. The site was developed to enable traffic circulation, provide ambulance access, and enhance safety. Equipped with a robust emergency department and imaging, the building also has a women’s center with a separate entrance so it can operate independently. Flexibility for growth was considered as well. The design was developed to support a specialty clinic and new technology in the future.

Creating a system-wide healthcare model leads to patient-centered care

Centura’s vision is to transform the future of healthcare for its patients and communities. To help Centura achieve a systemwide model for ambulatory neighborhood health centers, ERDMAN worked to:

  • Standardize the operational model among Centura’s practices and facilities
  • Create a consistent brand presence
  • Shift Centura’s focus from sick care to wellness care

To establish its new health model, Centura selected ERDMAN to develop an overall strategic plan, submarket definition, and location-specific deployment plan. The work also included creating an operational and experiential model for care, as well as facility design standards. As a result, Centura became equipped with a playbook for implementation that unifies its brand across multiple markets and emphasizes personalized, team-based attention and whole-person care.

Planning and implementation go hand in hand. As we worked with ERDMAN from up-front planning and understanding the market needs to design and implementation, we were able to work with the same team. This ensured everyone understood the overarching design goals so that early guidelines were established into our Neighborhood Health Centers.
