IDENTIFIED CHALLENGES

Located between Baltimore and Washington, DC, Columbia, Maryland has for years been a thriving economic center in the Mid-Atlantic. In 2003 a group of Columbia physicians began to envision a state-of-the-art medical center that would set a new standard in collaborative healthcare and could evolve with the needs of the Columbia/Howard County community. The group partnered with Howard County General Hospital, a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine, and set out to create the Medical Pavilion at Howard County. The project objectives focused on greatly expanding healthcare services to the community within an exceptional new facility:

  1. Provide a facility in which medical services are centralized for convenience and effectiveness
  2. Offer a multitude of services and specialties that fit with the needs of residents
  3. Incorporate design features that create a calming and healing atmosphere
  4. Create a medical office building outstanding in its environmentally conscious features

APPROACH / OUTCOME

The planning process for the new medical office building spanned several years. Mackenzie Commercial Real Estate served as project developer and lease administrator. ERDMAN provided design-build services for the five-story, 167,000-square-foot facility that today aligns premier medical, surgical and dental services within a single location. The Medical Pavilion at Howard County includes the following:

  1. 13 medical practices and 90 providers in a wide range of areas, including cardiology, ENT, orthopedics, pain management, women’s health, general surgery, and oral and maxillofacial surgery
  2. The Johns Hopkins Laboratory, the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Pharmacy, the Claudia Mayer/Tina Broccolino Cancer Resource Center, Central Maryland Radiation Oncology, and the Howard County General Hospital Wellness Center
  3. Two linear accelerators and an infusion suite with a healing garden
  4. Numerous green building features and practices that have led to a LEED Silver Level certification
  5. A new entrance and parking area oriented toward downtown Bethlehem, helping to reconnect the campus with the city

The Medical Pavilion has transformed access to quality healthcare in the region not only for the Columbia/Howard County community but also Anne Arundel County, which includes Laurel, Ellicott City, and Annapolis.
