Why More Providers are Seeing Value in Medical Scribes
Healthcare Dive, April 13, 2017

Health Affairs recently published a study on time allocation of physicians and found they are spending slightly more time on computer desktop activities than seeing patients. This reflects other studies and has led to a search for solutions to allow doctors to spend more time on patient care. Consequently, medical scribes are being sought more often to sit in on patient visits and provide documentation as well as information retrieval for physicians.

One report found that the incorporation of scribes improved case mix index from 0.5 to 1.0 on average, leading to substantial increases in revenue. While training requirements have not been standardized for the role, ACMSS provides a certification process. Two leaders in the field that offer training programs are Scribe America and Physicians Angels.
